Nebulizer VS Inhaler Treatment

Nebulizer VS Inhaler Treatment

  • 2021-02-07

Drug therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) aims to reduce the frequency and severity of attacks. This contributes to the overall improvement of your health, including your ability to exercise. Inhalation therapy, which includes inhalers and nebulizers, is the most frequently prescribed form of treatment for COPD.

While both nebulizers and inhalers are effective in many situations, nebulizers are superior in certain circumstances. For 10 to 15 minutes or longer, nebulizers deliver a continuous mist of medication into your lungs. This enables you to breathe normally during treatment through your mouth.

Inhalers, on the other hand, deliver medication in short bursts via aerosol. You must coordinate your breath with them in order to inhale the medication quickly and deeply. Then you must hold your breath in order for the medication to enter your system. If you have significant difficulty breathing, inhalers may not be as effective as nebulizers at delivering medication to your lungs.

Additionally, certain COPD medications, such as metaproterenol and acetylcysteine, can be administered via nebulizer but not via inhaler.

A nebulizer converts liquid medication into a mist to aid in the treatment of asthma. They are available in electric and battery-powered configurations. They are available in two sizes: a portable version that you can carry with you and a larger version that sits on a table and plugs into a wall. Both consist of a base that houses an air compressor, a small container that holds liquid medication, and a tube that connects the air compressor to the medicine container. A mouthpiece or aerosol mask is located above the medicine container. This is used to inhale the mist.

What is the proper way to use a nebulizer?

Your doctor will decide how frequently you should use the nebulizer. Inquire with your doctor if your treatment requires any special instructions. Additionally, you should read the manual that came with your machine.

The following are general instructions for using a nebulizer:

1. Place the compressor on a flat surface that allows it to reach an outlet safely.
2. Ascertain that all components are clean.
3. Before preparing the medication, thoroughly wash your hands.
4. Place your medication in the container if it is premixed. If necessary, measure the correct amount and then pour it into the container.
5. The tube should be connected to the compressor and the liquid container.
6. Connect the mouthpiece or mask in place.
7. Switch on the nebulizer and check to see if it is misting.
8. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and close your mouth tightly around it, or secure the mask over your nose and mouth, leaving no gaps.
9. Inhale and exhale slowly until the medicine is gone. This may take between five and fifteen minutes.

10. Throughout the treatment, keep the liquid container upright.
